Leadership Communications In Times Of Crisis | General Roméo Dallaire

During our webinar interview with General Romeo Dallaire, we asked him to share his insights on leadership in times of crisis, communication skills, risk management, and navigating these unprecedented times. A natural leader, Dallaire showed up quickly on social media to share his appreciation for those on the front lines of the crisis, and to provide insights and his experience to inspire business leaders.

Five tips on leadership communications during a crisis

1 – Make sure you don’t feel alone, that you are communicating, that you’re talking to other human beings, even if it’s only to vent, and then be able to feel that you’re not alone in this exercise. You’ll not solve it alone. So you might as well establish that communication so that you are sustained and in fact encouraged.

2 – Your team also needs to be able to talk amongst themselves. Ensure they have means to communicate with each other, especially if they are working remotely.

3 – Your team needs to hear repeatedly, repeatedly repeatedly, the message that is pertinent to your handling of the crisis. It’s only by that repetition, and that continuum of communications that it will sink in

4- Tell your team what is happening, and you maintain your credibility. Much of the concerns and stressors for the team are rumors or simply feelings of isolation

5 – You don’t have all the answers and you’ve got to tell people you don’t, and that you are working on it. But if you try to try to BS your way into this you’ll lose credibility.
