Thrive: A guide to optimal health and performance through plant-based whole foods
Brendan Brazier is a professional Ironman triathlete, best-selling author on performance nutrition, and the creator of an award-winning line of whole food nutritional products called VEGA. A two-time Canadian 50km Ultra Marathon Champion, he is also one of only a few professional athletes in the world whose diet is 100 per cent plant-based.
He started competing in Ironman triathlon racing in the late 1990s and his performance steadily improved each year. At Ironman Canada in 1999, he finished in 21st place. The following year he placed 14th, then 11th, and followed with an eighth place finish in 2002 in Ironman Utah.
In 2003 and 2006, the hard work paid off for Brazier when he won the Canadian 50km Ultra Marathon Championships. Between those championships, though, Brazier was hit by a car while cycling, so he was unable to compete while recovering from his injuries. Full of energy and drive, Brazier did not sit on the sidelines. Instead, he took advantage of the time off to write a book outlining the successful diet that had helped him improve his athletic performance at an above-average rate. A Canadian best-seller within five months, The Thrive Diet was re-released in 2007. His latest book, Thrive Fitness: Mental and Physical Strength for Life, came out in early 2009.
Realizing how his special diet helped him reach superior performance levels, Brazier partnered with a sport nutrition company to produce commercial versions of his blended drink formula and 100 per cent raw whole food energy bar. The product line, VEGA, is one of the best-selling health food products on the Canadian market and available in over 4,000 stores. Its success earned Brazier a prestigious Nutrition Business Journal merit award.
