Maureen McTeer explores the future of the human race in relation to advances in science and technology. As Canada's foremost expert on issues of science, ethics and public policy, in her presentations she points out the ethical questions that arise as science forges ahead. Using plain language, she encourages audiences to participate in discussions surrounding genetic research.
She recently returned from South Africa, where she represented the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood. The international organization is working with Canada and other countries to achieve a goal of reducing by two-thirds, the 500,000 deaths of women and girls annually due to preventable causes related to pregnancy and birth by 2015.
McTeer and the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood are also asking the Canadian government to lobby to have the topics of maternal health plus child health and survival placed on the agenda at the next G-8 and G-20 events, when the world's most powerful and developed nations meet.
