Summer Olympians - The 6th in our Series Featuring the Olympics Hot Topic
July 7, 2009The second phase of tickets to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver began on June 6. VANOC released 200,000 tickets to the public, and in its first day more than 130,000 were sold. While the Games are still eight months away, summer is just around the corner. This month we're featuring some our favourite summer Olympians who've inspired us all.
Adam van Koeverden - Canadian Flag Bearer and Medalist
It's hard to believe this Canadian once thought he wasn't very good at sports, because in 2004 Adam van Koeverden won the title of Canada's top athlete after his impressive double medal win, including Gold, at the Olympics in Athens. The champion Canadian kayaker was the obvious choice for flag bearer in Beijing where he beat his own world record in the K-1 500 winning him yet another Olympic medal.
Simon Whitfield - Olympic Triathlon Medalist
Eight years after he first captured the hearts of Canadians, Simon Whitfield did it again in Beijing. Known as the best triathlete in the world after his comeback win of a Gold Medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Whitfield had strong competition going into the 2008 Olympic Games. Falling behind during the final lap of the 10-kilometre race, the determined racer didn't give up. Ripping off his visor, Whitfield began an impressive sprint for the finish line, passing his competition to take home the silver medal.
Adam Kreek - "Sing Like Kreek!" Gold Medalist
Adam Kreek personifies what it means to be a proud Canadian. At the Beijing Olympics, he and his Men's 8 rowing team worked in sync to win the Gold medal. Kreek's pride transcended TV sets across Canada during the medal ceremony, when the rower sang his proud and powerful version of 'O Canada.' That moment inspired many athletes, including triathlete Simon Whitfield who wrote "sing like Adam Kreek" on the handlebars of his bike during his medal winning race.
Alexandre Despatie - Springboard Champion and Olympian
A familiar NSB speaker, Alexandre Despatie is one of our country's best young athletes and he proved it again by bringing home a silver medal from the 2008 Summer Olympics. He overcame adversity to win his second career medal in the three-metre springboard diving event and add to his impressive list of accomplishments that includes 42 Canadian national titles. Fully bilingual, Despatie is a role model for fellow Canadians, sharing with them what it takes to achieve excellence in all areas of life.
